Colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer is a disease in which cells in the colon or rectum grow out of control. It is the third-most common cancer type in Europe (after breast and lung cancer). To prevent the disease, regular screenings in elderly is advocated, along with a diet low in animal fats and high in fruits, vegetables, and grains.
The so-called Resistant Starch is not absorbed in the small intestine but reaches the colon undigested. It is a source of fermentable substrate for probiotics resulting in the production of short-chain fatty acids, acting preventative of cancer development. Resistant Starch also causes a high fecal bulk important for excretion of tumor cells.
Therefore, ingestion of Resistant Starch (30-40 gram per day) in several clinical studies have showed a protective effect on colorectal cancer, and in some studies also on other intestinal cancer forms.
As amylose is a Resistant Starch, PlantCarb offers two solutions in this field:
- plantCarb Lean Baking Flour is a high-amylose flour that can replace wheat 50-100% depending on recipe.
- plantCarb Lean Food Starch is with its content of >90% amylose a fully Resistant Starch.
Aside from Resistant Starch, also the so-called beta-glucans have been researched and found consistently protective for colorectal cancer. Based on 100% barley, plantCarb Lean Baking Flour contains a high concentration on beta-glucans, as barley is the grain with most beta-glucans.
Importantly we note that the research on Resistant Starch and beta-glucans and cancer is still ongoing, and no such anti-cancer official Health Claim has been recognized by international food regulators to date.
