Cholesterol
Raised cholesterol levels increase the risks of heart disease and stroke. A third of ischaemic heart disease is attributable to high cholesterol. Change in nutrition and exercise pattern help ameliorate the condition, and certain functional foods can support in lowering blood cholesterol. This includes the so-called beta-glucans.
Barley contains higher amounts of beta-glucan than any other grain, including oats, rye, and wheat, and is therefore recognized as a superior source of beta-glucans. Since barley beta-glucan is distributed throughout the kernel, the amount of beta-glucan in refined barley products remains unchanged.
Therefore, plantCarb Lean Baking Flour, that is based on 100% barley, contains a high concentration of beta-glucans.
The effects of beta glucans on blood cholesterol have been recognized as a Health Claim by the European Food Safety Authority EFSA.
New research indicates several other positive effects of beta-glucans on e.g., diabetes, and weight control, albeit such Health Claims have not yet been recognized by international food regulators.
